15 Films Critics Got Right (But Audiences Got Wrong)
9. Lady Macbeth
Rotten Tomatoes: 90% (Average rating: 7.7)
IMDb: 6.9
This is another British art-house film, but this one is less easy to explain then films like You Were Never Really Here. Many British Art-House films are slow mood pieces, while Lady Macbeth is freaking insane and incredibly entertaining.
Full of graphic sex scenes, horrific violence, intense melodrama, stunning cinematography, a demented revenge plot and staggering amounts of pathos, this is a film which has something for everyone so the 6.9 IMDb rating is simply wrong.
Lady Macbeth was arguably the best film of 2017 (or certainly near the top of the list at the very least) and could easily be classed as a masterpiece. Aside from a problematic sex scene early on, the film doesn't really make any missteps and works as a masterful combination of art-house cinema and entertainment, a period drama for viewers who don't like period dramas and as an all-around great movie. That shouldn't add up to a mere 6.9.
Looking on the bright side, IMDb voters judged God's Own Country, 2017's other great British film, far better with a 7.7 rating, but sadly Lady Macbeth was shockingly misjudged.
Should Be Rated: 8.0
