15 Films That Hated London

10. Flood

The Synopsis - In contrast to some of the natural 'disasters' that have been depicted on film over the years, the widespread flooding of London is a realistic and worrying possibility. 2007's Flood depicts the scenario through the eyes of a handful of governmental, military and civilian eyes, including those of Rob (Robert Carlyle), his father Leonard (Tom Courtenay) and ex-wife Sam (Jessalyn Gilsig), all expert marine engineers. When a storm surge, combined with rising sea levels and the spring tide, breaks through the Thames Barrier, much of central London is plunged under several feet of water. The three then attempt to devise and implement a solution that will redirect the water flow, whilst the military have their own ideas. The Destruction - Though the special effects aren't brilliant, Flood does a decent job of showcasing just what the capital could look like in the event of flooding, which is a plausible threat given rising sea levels despite the presence of the Thames Barrier, which is presently able to curb the river in some places but not in others, as flooding in Surrey and other areas at the beginning of the year showed. The film shows several iconic landmarks underwater throughout its runtime, including Westminster and the South Bank, the London Underground and Trafalgar Square, none of which are spared from the rampant waters.
