15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Based On Comic Books

12. Hercules

A History of Violence
Dark Horse/Paramount

When wrestler, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, branched out into acting, his greatest ambition was to star as the Greek demi-god, Hercules. (I mean... Hercules was actually a Roman character and the Greek equivalent was called Heracles, but let's not get into that.)

In 2014, Johnson got his wish when he won the title role in Brett Ratner's Hercules. Although people assumed the story is based on one of the many Greek legends, this film is an adaptation of the Radical Comic, Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

Even though the adaptation revolves around the same time period, war, and characters, there is one fundamental difference; Dwayne Johnson's character isn't a demi-god. In the comic, it is suspected that Hercules' Twelve Labours are nothing more than embellishment until the very end, when he showcases his godly strength. But in the film, he's 100% mortal.
