15 Films You Didn't Realise Were Remakes
9. Scent Of A Woman
In Scent of a Woman, a college student called Charlie has to look after a disgruntled blind army officer, Frank Slade. At the same time, Charlie is trying to stop being expelled from college after he was framed for a prank against his headmaster.
Interesting, Charlie's story arc with his college is nowhere to be seen in the original Italian film, Profume Di Donna. In this version, a young lad called Ciccio is assigned to look after a captain called Fausto, who lost his sight and hand during a war. Although the story structure is the same in both films, the most memorable moments from the English version aren't in the original. There's no tango scene. No blind driving. No hoo-ha.
The biggest difference has to be how Frank deals with his suicidal tendencies. In the English version, it seems to come out of nowhere near the end. In the Italian version, Ciccio finds a pistol in Fausto's briefcase on his first night looking after him, insinuating that he's preparing to take his own life.
