15 Funniest Comedies Of The Last Decade
2. The Big Sick (2017)
One of the smartest ways to avoid the cringey cliches that follow romantic comedies is by telling a story that is devoid of the usual tropes that make the genre so predictable. After watching The Big Sick, it feels like the film's writers, Kumail Nanijiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, were able to successfully avoid those pitfalls by creating something unique, interesting and, most importantly, really funny.
Nanijiani plays a character called Kumail, a struggling stand-up comedian who is forced to watch on as his peers succeed around him. Despite being down in the dumps about his career, he ends up meeting a woman called Emily, played by the always amazing Zoe Kazan, and the two begin a relationship with each other.
Although things start out wonderfully, a number of obstacles stand in their way. Kumail's parents are determined to set him up with a girl from the same religion, which eventually causes them to break-up. However, the two are unexpectedly brought back together when Emily ends up in a coma due to an unknown illness. Forced to deal with his feelings towards her and her awkward parents - played by the fantastic Ray Romano and Helen Hunt - we watch as Kumail makes some major decisions in his life.
Despite being a rather dramatic situation, there are plenty of laughs as we watch Nanijiani try to navigate through everything that's going on with him with mass amounts of charm and charisma. While it feels like it's success came out of nowhere, once you watch the movie, it'll be clear why The Big Sick was such a big triumph at the box office.
