The fact that Annette Bening has never won an Oscar is a strange one, especially when you consider her longevity and the sheer volume of brilliant roles she's produced over the years.

Bening has lead the likes of American Beauty, Being Julia, The American President, The Kids Are All Right and many rom-com, sci-fi flick and indie dramas in-between, offering up commanding and fully realised portrayals of a wide range of characters.

With an ability to play funny (Mars Attacks! is just a blast of a Bening performance), conflicted (American Beauty) and absolutely heartbreaking (The Kids Are All Right), Bening has been shining on screen for decades now. She has four Oscar nods to her name, a couple Golden Globe wins, and countless movies where she should really have swept up at award season.

Thanks to an appearance in the MCU's Captain Marvel, it could be that we're looking at a new era of her career, complete with more risks and increased popularity, and hopefully some long overdue industry accolades.
