Simply put, Ethan Hawke is hard to pin down. He never does the same film twice, refuses to pander too much to mainstream cinema, and tends to constantly switch things up with every role he takes on.

He's done comedy, romance, horror, drama, biopics, coming-of-age experiments and sci-fi genre-benders; he's played troubled family men, bewildered police officers, hopeless romantics, and disillusioned drifters. And, of course, he's nailed every one.

Hawke's best work can be found in his collaborations with Richard Linklater, which includes the spotless Before Trilogy and the experimental drama Boyhood, but he's also pulled no punches in crime thrillers like Training Day and troubling dramas like First Reformed.

Actor, director, writer and producer, Hawke shines no matter what role he's playing behind or in front of the camera, and given his extensive career and impressive variety, it's a wonder why he's been so unlucky at the Academy over the years.
