12. Glenn Close

It wouldn't be an article about Oscar shockers without mentioning Glenn Close, who's been nominated a heartbreaking eight times without a win.

A powerful, scene-stealing presence in every one of her movies, Close has made her career playing women who are as strong as they vulnerable, with performances that range from horribly tragic to uncompromisingly hard-edged.

Between 1983 and 2021, she's received nominations for such all-timers as The World According to Garp, Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons, and seemed poised to win her overdue statue for her career-best turn in 2019's The Wife. Instead, Close lost out to Olivia Colman's admittedly stellar (but not quite better) work in The Favourite.

One of modern cinema's most beloved icons, Glenn Close will inevitably stretch her nomination total in the coming years. Hopefully the Academy gives her an award in the process, as it's about time.
