Though her career got off to something of a slow start - with only small TV appearances and indie movie flops to keep her company - Naomi Watts was shot to superstardom thanks to her enrapturing lead performance in the David Lynch mind-melter Mulholland Drive.

Since then, Watts has proved time and time again that she's one of the most challenging and powerful actors in Hollywood, having brilliant performances in the horror film The Ring, disaster drama The Impossible, and troubling crime flick 21 Grams - the latter of the two securing her an Oscar nod.

At her best when portraying women in deeply uncertain situations and forced to face things they'd never had dreamed possible, Watts plays scared and unsure like a champ, but always carries herself with an inner-strength and resilience that's rarely seen from other stars of her generation.

Sure to keep surprising audiences for years to come, Watts is in desperate need for some Academy recognition, so long as she keeps pushing herself.
