15 Great Film Franchises Ruined By Too Many Sequels And Remakes

When Alien was released in 1979, it launched one of the most recognisable sci-fi franchises in history, not to mentioned the stellar career of Sigourney Weaver, instantly becoming a trailblazing achievement for female leads in cinema.

Nearly a full decade before Die Hard hit cinemas, Ellen Ripley was the original singlet-wearing, ass-kicking badass of the big screen and people couldn't get enough of it.

Unfortunately, 40 years later and off the back of a stumbling series reboot, people are at a stage where they can, and have, had enough of it.

Although 1986's sequel Aliens was a strong follow up to the original, the series began falling down the hill after a lacklustre trilogy effort six years later and a bizarre fourth instalment that took place 200 years in the future with a Ripley clone. Because why not.

A supposed breath of life was to come in the form a crossover series with the Predator franchise. Although not a flop at the box office by any means, the two films were critically body slammed through a flaming table on release.

Prometheus set the stage of a unique prequel series but the saga fell into the same holes it had in the past with inconsistent story-telling and a misuse of their cast.

With no signs of the franchise laying down, who knows where they go from here. A third film in the prequel series is on the horizon with Weaver even hinting at a potential reprisal of her famous role.
