15 Great Movies From The 2010s That Are Frustratingly Underrated
11. God's Own Country
Plot: A lonely Yorkshire farmer begins a relationship with a Romanian migrant worker.
A terrific LGBT love story set in the bleak yet beautiful rural landscape of Yorkshire, God's Own Country is one hell of a directional debut for writer-director Francis Lee.
While the film doesn't actually have all that much dialogue a lot of the time, it still makes for a highly moving experience since every emotional beat is brilliantly conveyed through Lee's poetic directing and the highly expressive performances from leads Josh O'Connor and Alec Secareanu. The film also contains a superb supporting performance from Ian Hart as the protagonist's father.
God's Own Country is a great drama that mixes pessimism and hope in an unforgettable manner, but unfortunately, since it's a British independent film, it's inevitably flown under the radar.
It's a movie that urgently needs to be rescued from obscurity, especially since it's such a great antidote to all of Hollywood's terrible romantic films. More than anything else, God's Own Country is a showcase in how to do a great romantic drama without endless melodrama and audience manipulation, as well as a reminder that British cinema is still a force to be reckoned with.
