10. Macbeth

Plot: This is a faithful retelling of Macbeth that uses the play's dialogue.

Macbeth is easily the greatest Shakespearean film of the decade and frankly, it's among the best ever.

It's a mesmerizing work of cinema in which every shot is stunning and where all of it is beautifully put together, but it's also a very worthy translation of a brilliant play. The tragedy and themes of the play are superbly conveyed, making for a truly upsetting film with a huge emotional impact.

The most impressive thing of all? Much of the play's power is conveyed through the film's expressive cinematography, while the dialogue is more sparse. A dialogue-light Shakespeare movie might've sounded like a terrible idea, but it actually works very well here. It also has a great cast delivering the goods, especially Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

Sadly, Macbeth has largely failed to connect with audiences. It was a box office bomb, it got hardly any awards attention and it's got an unfairly low IMDb rating of 6.6 on IMDb. It's hard to see exactly why this hasn't been more popular; once again, fingers crossed it gets the recognition it deserves further down the line.
