Plot: Following a death threat during confession, a priest (Brendan Gleeson) goes through a troubled week filled with spiritual crisis.
This Irish drama film was one of the finest films of 2014 and since that was the 2010's best year for films, that's saying something.
Calvary is also arguably one of the best-written films of the decade. A stunning combination of dark comedy, mystery, shattering drama and haunting thematic meditations, this is an unusually rich and powerful film that says an incredible amount about humanity in just 100 minutes. Many films would be unable to tell their audiences this much in three hours.
Calvary is not merely a screenwriting showcase though. It boasts a staggering, career-best performance from Brendan Gleeson and he's also brilliantly supported by a superb cast of Irish acting veterans, while writer-director John Michael McDonagh also proves himself a strong filmmaker and Calvary is full of memorable cinematography.
Ironically, Calvary is an unforgettable film but the various film award bodies managed to overlook it, and it's remained a somewhat obscure film that's never truly got the attention it deserves. It's under-seen, and therefore many have missed out on one of the decade's best screenplays.
