The original USS Enterprise helmsman hasn't led a particularly notable film career outside of Trek itself, with his biggest roles coming in animated voice-overs - and though for some he will remain the First Ancestor in Mulan, the arguably better film where he plays a bit-part is the gorgeously rendered fantasy adventure from Laika.

Drawing on old folklore and fables with a breathless dreaminess, it's arguably the best offering from the much-respected stop-motion studio today, bridging the gap between Aardman tangibility and Ghibli weirdness with deft aplomb - and, in some cases, targeting the waterworks of even the hardest film buff with unnerving precision.
