15 Greatest Death Scenes In The Saw Franchise

9. The Ice Block Trap (Saw IV)

Saw 4 Detective Matthews
Lionsgate

After being captured by Jigsaw at the end of Saw II, Detective Matthews reappears in the fourth movie, having been imprisoned for months and now being placed in a trap intended to test Detective Rigg's obsession with saving people.

Matthews is suspended above a block of ice by a chain, while a series of heaters melt the ice in the direction of Detective Hoffman, who is apparently hooked up to an electric chair (but with him later being revealed as Jigsaw's accomplice, he actually isn't).

All Rigg has to do is not enter this room for 90 minutes and everyone inside will be safe, but due to his eagerness to recklessly throw himself into situations, he rushes in before the timer expires.

Matthews, in an attempt to stop Rigg entering, fires his gun at him, but it's too late: Rigg opening the door triggers a mechanism which smashes two blocks of ice into Matthews' head, exploding his noggin into a bloody mist.

Though the reasoning for testing Rigg is honestly pretty flimsy, it's still a savagely inventive death scene, and again does away with another of the series' most resourceful and entertaining heroes.
