Pop quiz, hot shot. Speed set a new standard for an action thrill ride. Its a wonderfully outrageous premise. The bus and the plot of the movie literally cannot slow down. Once the movie opens with the elevator hostage sequence, it never lets us go and we are rolling down the highway right along with them. It is also interesting as an action movie because it is very much about the thrill ride over actual gunfights or combat. Reeves barely even uses his gun in the movie. Watching an actual bus tear through the city in practical stunts is the centerpiece of the movie and that's the best decision they could have made. We can all find the time to sit back and enjoy the violence, right? Sandra Bullock is a great sidekick to Reeves Jack Traven. Shes the normal human being in the movie that we all can relate to. Dennis Hopper as the villain is full of cheese. There are scenes where he enters and leaves, while just laughing maniacally. All he needed was a moustache to twirl. At just under two hours, I dont even need to tell you not to fast forward through this one because this movie doesnt waste any time. Best line: "A bomb is made to explode. That's its meaning. Its purpose. Your life is empty because you spend it trying to stop the bomb from becoming. And for who? For what? You know what a bomb is, Jack, that doesn't explode?
