15 Greatest Horror Directors Of All Time

9. Lucio Fulci

Wes Craven
Arrow Films

Notable films: Zombi 2, City Of The Living Dead, The Beyond, The New York Ripper

Some horror fans prefer the slow-burning atmospherics of supernatural tales, but for those who would rather see blood spilled by the bucketload and the most imaginatively gory deaths possible, the films of Lucio Fulci are a must.

After working as a writer throughout much of the 1950s, Fulci began directing movies and soon discovered a particular talent for horror: the eviscerated dogs from A Lizard In A Woman's Skin soon paved the way for classics such as Zombi 2, with its infamous scene of a zombie eating a shark, one of the finest undead movies outside of the Romero canon.

Plenty more gorefests followed, with particular notoriety earned for the grizzly slasher The New York Ripper, but in spite of all the blood and guts Fulci's reputation lay on his mastery of the craft, his direction always confident, assured and stylish.
