15 Greatest Horror Movie Comedies
7. Beetlejuice
Arguably Tim Burton’s best work - Beetlejuice is a thoroughly creative comedy about the afterlife with a cracking cast and brilliant effects work.
Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin play a sickly sweet couple, the Maitlands, living an idyllic countryside life. We see their car plunge from a bridge and they trudge back through the front door soaking wet.
They soon notice some differences, including their lack of reflection and the appearance of a book on their coffee table – The Handbook For The Recently Deceased. They discover that they are in fact dead and very soon their house is to be bought by the Deetz family, yuppie New Yorkers who move in and start to change everything.
In a spectacular sequence, they visit a kind of netherworld for the afterlife and meet their caseworker, Juno, who informs them that they must scare the Deetz family out of their home if they want rid of them. She also warns them away from any contact with Beetlegeuse - a self-proclaimed bio-exorcist.
The inevitable happens and he turns up to wreak havoc in the house. Beetlejuice is a wonderful comedy with Burton on peak form, he wrings terrific performances from an excellent ensemble including Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, Jeffrey Jones and particularly Michael Keaton who steals the show as Beetlegeuse.
