15 Greatest Horror Movie Comedies

8. Evil Dead 2

The original movie, The Evil Dead, was a pioneering low-budget showcase in guerrilla film-making and a seriously good horror film.

This was inevitably going to be hard to follow up with a direct sequel. Instead, Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell very cleverly changed the approach to this part-remix, part sequel. Whilst the focus is still very much on demons and gore, this time round there is a clear focus on black-humour and many argue that Evil Dead 2 is overall the superior film.

The opening section retells the plot of the original film in a pared down way. This time we only get Ash and Linda at the cabin and the discovery of the Professors tape, the readings of the Necronomicon and the demonic possession of Linda are all accelerated.

Ash messily dispatches her and early scenes give a sense of Campbell’s new approach to the character. From here the story brings new characters, Ash loses a possessed hand which then causes chaos throughout the movie and when it all comes to a close Ash is flung back to the 1300s along with his Oldsmobile – the setting for the wonderfully fun sequel, Army Of Darkness.
