11. The Redemption And Death of Harry Osborn - Spider-Man 3 (2007)
The first three Spider-Man films are really not just the story of Peter Parker as Spider-Man but more about the interlinking relationships between three young friends, Peter, Mary Jane and Harry, as they mature from high school to adulthood. So when one of this trio of main characters meets his end at the climax of Spider-Man 3 it's a significant - and surprisingly touching - moment in the series. After nursing a vendetta against his former best friend since his father died, a battle-scarred Harry comes to Peter's rescue after learning the error of his ways and helps Spidey fight off the assembled villainy of Venom and Sandman. Is this the start of a dynamic new crimefighting duo? Sadly not, as Harry sacrifices himself to save his friend from an attack from Venom. Much like his father before him, the New Goblin is impaled with his own glider. Although Raimi planned to make a Spider-Man 4, moments such as Harry's death, along with leaving Peter and Mary Jane's relationship on an effectively ambiguous note (we can safely assume they get back together but we don't see them completely having a happily ever after) reinforce the idea that the films belonged as as a trilogy and if the world wanted more Spidey films then a reboot was the right way to go.
