This sleeper hit remains one of the highest-grossing comedies ever, R-rated or otherwise.

While goodwill for it may have been considerably weakened after the horrors of its two sequels, The Hangover was a sleeper hit that deserved to be one. The premise is formulaic, the characters can be irritating and Mike Tyson, a convicted rapist, getting a big role is unfortunate, but other than that the film delivers considerably.

A very funny script, smart direction, a compelling and satisfying mystery plot and great performances from its well-matched cast result in a non-stop laugh-fest that remains one of the best R-rated studio comedies of recent times.

Best of all, it gets the adult tone just right. It is offensive, but it's offensive in a funny way and unlike its ghastly sequel it doesn't take things too far. The nastiness is also counter-balanced with a joyous and silly tone, so this is an R-rated comedy done properly.

This remains an enormously entertaining comedy and as insufferable as the franchise it spawned was, the original movie is definitely worth watching.
