Jaws is easily one of the best horror movies ever made, and also one of the best movies ever made in general. It's stunning on every conceivable level, managing to scare countless viewers away from every stepping foot in the ocean again. Though what some may not know is that this deep sea terror didn't start with Spielberg's 1975 classic.

Adapted from Peter Benchley's 1974 novel, Jaws takes place in the seaside town of Amity where a man-eating shark has been treating beachgoers like an all-you-can-eat buffet. It's up to the town sheriff, an oceanographer, and one cranky fisherman to cut through miles of bureaucratic red tape and save the day.

Spielberg's adaption of Benchley's novel is living proof that the book isn't always better than the movie. By cutting out unnecessary sub-plots and contrived character drama, the flick creates a much more focused and effective experience. Though, to give credit where credit is due, the movie owes its legacy to the book, even if it outdoes it in every way. Maybe just skip the last two sequels though, as Jaws 2 is actually pretty solid for what it is.
