15 Horror Movies You Probably Didn't Know Were Based On Books
13. Dark Water
The first of two movies on this list based off the works of Koji Suzuki, 2002's Dark Water is adapted from the author's short story collection of the same name. There are a total of seven stories in the collection, along with a prologue and epilogue. Each story is different in their own unique way, only being tied together by the common use of water imagery.
Dark Water, the film that is, focuses on a woman and her daughter as they try to adjust to life in their new apartment. Unfortunately for them, it proves more difficult then they expected as not everything is as it seems in their new abode.
Hitting screens in the J-horror boom, Dark Water can be considered among the likes of Pulse and One Missed Call as an underrated treat. When it comes to Suzuki's collection itself, it's equal parts horrifying and wholesome, making for a great read even for those who aren't a fan of the genre. It's an excellent work of horror fiction perfect for a dark and stormy night.
