15 Huge Controversies That Rocked Star Wars

5. Prowse v Lucas

Star Wars Darth Vader David Prowse

You really have to feel for David Prowse: though he can claim to be the first man to play Darth Vader, he was robbed of being actually recognised by anyone when George Lucas replaced his voice with the far cooler, far more menacing tones of James Earl Jones. That was fair enough, but if Prowse was left a little pissed by it - particularly as nobody warned him in advance - you could probably forgive him.

And then on top of that he wasn't even allowed to play Vader with his mask off - that opportunity went to Sebastian Shaw (who was later screwed out of one of his own scenes as some form of karma).

Prowse apparently didn't take it well, making "off-the-cuff" remarks to anyone who'd listen about Star Wars and Lucas, and he made the mistake of appearing on controversial documentary The People Vs George Lucas in 2010. No doubt unhappy with seeing one of his own stars openly criticising him, Prowse was then banned from attending any LucasFilm events by Lucas.

He claims he doesn't know why, but the documentary - on top of the fact that he spoiled the ending to The Empire Strikes Back in a speech at UC Berkeley in 1978 (two years before it even came out) - goes a long way to explaining it.
