It's suiting that one of the most bada** movies ever made also gets one of the most killer, epic closing shots of all time. Loveable rogues Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) and the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) find themselves pinned down in a small town by Bolivian police forces, and end up severely wounded. The two somewhat perversely discuss their next destination, before running out of their perch, firing their guns as we freeze on this iconic image, while the gunshots continue to ring out and the image becomes increasingly sepia-toned. There is, of course, not really any way that even two master outlaws like Butch and Sundance could have survived the onslaught of bullets we hear (all the more considering we don't hear their own pistols firing). Fans love to speculate about how they could have made it out alive, but the bottom line is that they went out how they lived, and their final stand is easily cinema's most memorable.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
