In Bradley Cooper's intense, heart-breaking tale of passion and spiralling self-destruction, the director plays Jackson Main, a struggling alcoholic and drug addict whose musical career is in danger of crumbling thanks to his own excesses. He meets Lady Gaga's Ally and helps her break into the industry but as she rises, he falls further until he realises, rather cruelly that he's standing in her way.

The end, which sees him kill himself to get out of her way is profoundly affecting, but we should have all seen it coming. The very first time the pair meet, Jack is looking for a late night bar as he's driven around town post-gig. And for one telling moment he's framed against the backdrop of a billboard showing four hangman's nooses, offering a chilling look at where this first meeting is going to lead.
