Release Date: December 25 (US, Limited), January (US, Wide), January 16 (UK) The Hype: Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (21 Grams, Birdman) helms his latest ambitious effort, a loose adaptation of Michael Punke's 2003 novel, in which fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) seeks to hunt down the three comrades (Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson) who robbed him after he was attacked by a bear. Iñárritu's Birdman cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (who has won back-to-back lensing Oscars over the last two years) is again handling the look of the film. How Well Will It Do?: Despite numerous reports of a chaotic production that has caused the film's budget to balloon to a huge $135 million, the first trailer suggests a bracingly intense, beautifully shot film that's almost certain to stir up passionate acclaim and another DiCaprio-driven box office haul. Awards are never set in stone, but Lubezki could very well score his third consecutive Oscar win, and of course, everyone will be patiently waiting to see whether DiCaprio finally manages to win that Best Actor Oscar. Either way, expect The Revenant to be one of the year's most unique and atmospheric cinematic outings.
