A horror anthology directed entirely by women, XX may have its flat moments as just about any horror compendium does, but for the most part its four stories stick to the right side of demented, serving up unsettling shocks with lashings of gallows humour.

With the likes of Melanie Lynskey and Christina Kirk giving memorable performances in their respective shorts, the distaff energy is strong throughout, and the concept works well enough that one genuinely looks forward to a potential follow-up.

Of all the horror anthologies released over the last few years, this is absolutely one of the most unique, consistent and memorable.
