Lars von Trier is no stranger to controversy, though by far his most divisive film to date is art-house horror flick Antichrist, in which two bereaved parents (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe) head to a cabin in the woods to try and mend their heartbreak. Spoiler: they don't.

It is fair to say that Antichrist is not for everyone: it goes to some incredibly uncomfortable places, features some extremely disturbing sexually violent imagery - you'll never look at rusty scissors the same away again - and some may simply find it too weird for its own sake.

But the film does have an unmistakably intoxicating power, largely thanks to Anthony Dod Mantle's gorgeous cinematography and the two fearless central performances.

What could've been an unbearably pretentious look at familial discord is, in fact, one of the most memorable and literally horrific cinema experiences of the last decade.
