6. Shock: Marion Cotillard, Robert Duvall & Lauren Dern Nominated For Acting Awards
There were three big acting nomination shocks this year, one great, one bad, and one OK. Firstly, despite pretty much mounting no campaign whatsoever, Marion Cotillard was nominated for her splendid work on the Dardennes' drama Two Days, One Night, presumably pushing Jennifer Aniston (Cake) and Amy Adams (Big Eyes) out of the way as she did, and rightly so. Secondly, and most bizarrely, was Robert Duvall receiving a nod for his decent-if-not-great performance in critically divisive drama The Judge. The movie pretty much fell upon deaf ears following its release, but given the industry's general love for Duvall and the sentimentality associated with his age, it's easy to see why they handed him his seventh nomination, which is his first in 16 years. Still, ludicrously undeserved. And finally, Laura Dern received her second nomination (and her first in 23 years) for Best Supporting Actress in Wild. Again, it's a solid performance, but awards worthy? With the likes of Rene Russo (Nightcrawler) and Jessica Chastain (A Most Violent Year) getting snubbed in her place? Absolutely not.
