15 Insane Shocks & Snubs From 2015 Oscar Nominations

5. Snub: Birdman For Best Film Editing

Though Birdman leads the pack alongside The Grand Budapest Hotel, earning nine nominations a piece, it probably should've been the outright leader given the ludicrous snub that was its failure to be nominated for Best Film Editing. Considering that the much-publicised conceit of the movie revolves around editing various long takes together into one seamlessly coherent whole, it was a hugely challenging job for Douglas Crise and Stephen Mirrione. Above all else, this is a major knock to Birdman's Best Picture hopes, considering that the last film to not at least be nominated for Best Film Editing and still win Best Picture was Ordinary People all the way back in 1980. Stranger things have happened, of course, but it's not looking good, and the nomination was totally, totally deserved. Perhaps it was simply damaged by its own seamlessness, and the unavoidable criticism that "there are only like 12 edits in the whole movie."
