15 Likely Movie Sequels That Hopefully Will Never Happen

4. Avatar 3 & 4

Previous Movies: Amid a tidal wave of hype and expectation, James Cameron's first narrative feature in 12 years, Avatar, surfaced in 2009, opening to strong reviews and breaking box office records to become the highest-grossing movie of all time, dethroning Cameron's own Titanic with an insane $2.78 billion haul. Avatar 2 is 100% happening and is currently in the pre-production stages, with filming likely to begin in the first half of next year, but it's what might be coming after that's a little more worrying... The Sequels: Cameron has envisioned Avatar 2 as part of a trilogy of movies, having written Avatar 2, 3 and 4 together, such that they are apparently going to be filmed back-to-back with release dates of December 2016, 2017 and 2018. Why It Should Never Happen: As inevitable as Avatar 2 was, doesn't it seem a little aggressive to start planning so many sequels? Yes, Avatar made a ton of money and, even if Avatar 2 only makes 25% of the original movie's gross, it's still going to be a commercial success, but given how long Cameron takes to prepare just one movie, it's difficult to actually believe that he's really capable of making three movies in a row in such a short space of time. The Avatar universe is interesting enough to warrant one sequel, sure, but is there really enough imaginative material here for such a wide cinematic canon? Maybe Avatar 2 will surprise everyone, but it's probably best to keep expectations middling, as the law of diminishing returns is a dangerous reality here.
