Oscar Win: Best Sound

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 35%

The sound categories often allow epic tentpole movies to win Oscars, and this star-studded disaster flick is one such example.

Earthquake is an especially interesting Best Sound winner, though, as the film's theatrical experience was powered by "Sensurround", in which audiences were targeted with "infra bass" sound waves during destruction scenes.

It was a huge hit with audiences, and no doubt contributed to the film scooping an Oscar, even though the tech quickly fell out of use within a few years.

As for the film itself? Despite its all-star cast (Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy and Richard Roundtree to name just a few), it's ultimately a pretty unremarkable 1970s disaster flick at the end of the day.

There's some mildly amusing carnage, but nothing that really endures four decades on.
