Oscar Win: Best Picture

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 35%

One of only two Best Picture winners to win a single Oscar, Harry Beaumont's movie is often cited as the first fully-fledged Hollywood musical, and as such it only really endures as an interesting historical artefact.

Almost 90 years on, the film's forgettable, dry songs pack nothing approaching a peppy punch, the acting is stilted, and there's a reason why even card-carrying film buffs have probably never heard of it.

Though praised upon release, contemporary critics have rightly slammed the film as an ill-aged calamity.

Granted, none of the five Best Picture nominees that year have Fresh Tomatometer ratings, but even so, this is undoubtedly one of the worst-ever winners of the Big One.
