Oscar Win: Best Original Song

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 33%

Though there's little doubt that Irene Cara's iconic "Flashdance... What a Feeling" was the rightful recipient of the Best Original Song Oscar in 1984, it's one of the few standout aspects of an otherwise totally run-of-the-mill dance movie.

Jennifer Beals is a great dancer and less-great an actual actress, though it's the script, rife with bland characters and cheeseball cliches, that's the worst offender here.

The movie's always going to be a corny 80s classic that has its fans, and understandably so, but if you approach it with anything remotely resembling a critical eye, there's shockingly little going on underneath the hood (even for the genre's low standards).
