Total Number of Films: 12

Great: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search For Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness

Rubbish: Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek: Insurrection, Star Trek: Nemesis

The old fan theory holds that only the even-numbered Star Trek movies turn out to be any good. I dispute this, given that I rank third film The Search for Spock, seventh film Generations and eleventh film Star Trek (the reboot) among the best; not to mention the fact that tenth instalment Nemesis is quite possibly the very worst of the entire series.

I also strongly dispute that the most recent film Star Trek Into Darkness is one of the worst, although I acknowledge it has its problems, and perhaps strays a bit too far from the original spirit of the franchise.

That said, I personally see no problem with the movies being a bit less introspective and a bit more crash-bang-wallop than the TV shows were; there's plenty of small screen material out there if that's how you prefer your Star Trek. Extra spectacle is always a key point of any small-to-big screen translation, so it's only fitting the movies pack a bit more bang for buck.
