Total Number of Films: 12

Great: Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part 3, Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Jason X, Freddy Vs Jason

Rubbish: Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, Friday the 13th (2009 remake)

Once again - if you're talking enduring franchises, one can't overlook the kill-crazy misadventures of good old Jason Voorhees. Okay, so 1980's Friday the 13th and the series it spawned was a fairly obvious imitation of Halloween, and some may question whether any of the films are of real value; but they got serious mileage out of that simple slasher format, and turned out a considerably better average than the Halloween saga (of which I'd argue none of the sequels measured up to the original, bar the entertaining oddity Halloween III: Season of the Witch).

They lost their way on the Jason-free Part V, but became one of the few franchises to make its definitive entry on the sixth instalment, with the B-movie par excellence that is Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. It's been hit-and-miss since.

Alas, like A Nightmare on Elm Street, the series also suffered the indignity of a poor Platinum Dunes reboot (still, I realise the 2009 film is not without its admirers, though I suspect this is primarily for Julianna Guill's sex scene). When we'll see another Friday the 13th is anyone's guess, as the planned 13th film has been stuck in development hell for over seven years now.
