It wasn't much of a surprise that J.K. Simmons won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work in Whiplash in the first award of the night. However, Simmons set the standard for acceptance speeches high from the outset, thanking his family and imploring anyone watching to call (not text) their parents if they're lucky enough to have one or both still around. It was a succinct yet heartfelt speech that reminded audiences of just how brilliant Simmons was in the movie: after all, he seems like a class act and genuinely nice guy in real life, far away from the brashness of his drill instructor-esque music teacher in the movie.
