There are some assumptions about Disney characters being based on real people that aren't correct - for instance, Tinkerbell was never based on Marilyn Monroe. But there is a rich history of characters being modelled on real-world figures.

Ursula from The Little Mermaid was based on Divine, Ariel on Alyssa Milano and Joan Crawford was the inspiration for The Evil Queen. On top of that, Cruella De Vil's voice was based on Tallulah Bankhead, and it turns out Aladdin was also based on someone.

Originally, it was intended that he would be based on Michael J Fox, but in the end the animators decided to model him on Tom Cruise. His baggy trousers, meanwhile, were based on the movement of MC Hammer.
