15 Mind-Blowing Facts About Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy
10. James Cameron Was Plotting A Spider-Man Movie That Would Have Been Super Weird
Sam Raimi's Spider-Man wasn't the first attempt to bring this iconic Marvel superhero to the big screen - Sony had actually been trying to make a Spider-Man movie since the mid-80s (which is why they jumped at the chance to buy the rights from the near bankrupt Marvel in 1999). One of the ideas rejected by the House of Ideas long before that though was a "scriptment" by Avatar and Terminator director James Cameron. His version would have left fans fuming thanks to some drastic changes to the source material and Electro and Sandman bearing little resemblance to their comic book counterparts (the filmmaker even toyed with the idea of casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doctor Octopus). The movie was also heavy on profanity and would have included what sounded like a pretty graphic sex scene between Peter Parker and Mary Jane. Throw in a climax which would have taken place atop the World Trade Centre, and Cameron's ideas were simply too big for the time. Nearly a decade of legal disputes over the rights would follow before Sam Raimi finally got his chance to bring Spider-Man to the big screen.
