11. Toothless Kills Stoick - How To Train Your Dragon 2

Who Dies?: Hiccup's (Jay Baruchel) father Stoick (Gerard Butler). Method of Death: Shot by a fireball (by Toothless). After evil warlord Drago Bludvist (Djimon Hounsou) summons the Alpha dragon, he is able to take control of all he nearby dragons, including Toothless. As such, Toothless doesn't recognise Hiccup and fires a blast toward him, causing Stoick to run in front of the blast to save his son. Why It's Awesome: What really makes this death scene work so well is that it's emotional and terrifically affecting without needing to layer on the sentimentality too thick. There's no death monologue to speak of at all, nor any over-the-top music: he's gone, that's that, and then he gets a Viking funeral. Though it's unavoidably going to cause upset to children watching, it follows the lead of family classics like The Lion King by dealing with death in a matter-of-fact manner.
