15 Most Critically Adored Films 2016 - Ranked
8. Kubo And The Two Strings
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97% (180 reviews)
Moviegoers looking for a refreshing change to the dominance of Disney and Pixar animations this year couldn’t get much better than Kubo and the Two Strings – a bittersweet but ultimately charming stop-motion animation from Laika, the same studio behind the likes of Coraline and The Boxtrolls.
Featuring the vocal talents of Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron, it tells the tale of a young boy who must embark on a quest to find his late father’s magical suit of armour in order to defeat his evil grandfather, the vengeful Moon King voiced by Ralph Fiennes in full Voldemort mode.
It may have flopped at the box office (probably due in part to that aforementioned Disney dominance) but critics were more than taken, praising it for its offbeat and often metaphorical storyline and beautiful animation.
