An almost inconceivably well-executed debut for director Ari Aster, Hereditary is the definition of cinematic anxiety: a gradual, stylish and deeply upsetting film propelled forward by an Oscar-worthy performance from the reliably brilliant Toni Collette.

Though the film will be forever remembered for that shocking scene, the whole is so richly drawn, so intricately constructed and so damn effective as both a horror film and a bereavement drama that it leaves pretty much every similar recent movie in the dust.

Long after fans have finished complaining about it being snubbed for numerous Oscars, Hereditary will live on as one of the most bone-rattlingly human, trauma-infused horror films of the 21st century, if not ever. Don't miss it.

Hereditary's slower, more artful approach didn't resonate quite as strongly with all critics as the best-reviewed horror film of the year, though...
