15 Most Critically Adored Horror Movies Of 2018
8. Upgrade
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86% (7.2/10)
Without question one of 2018's most under-appreciated mainstream releases, this gonzo sci-fi horror from Saw co-creator Leigh Whannell is basically the R-rated triumph Venom should've been.
Ironically fronted by the man derisively referred to as "cut-price Tom Hardy", Upgrade in fact teases a career-best performance out of Logan Marshall-Green, who as a quadriplegic given a new lease of life with an A.I. spinal implant, brilliantly conveys the physical other-ness of the chip taking control of his body.
A surprisingly character-driven movie which makes the most of its $5-ish million budget, Upgrade manages to be a genuinely strong dramatic work while delivering the requisite grisly blood-letting.
Gorgeously filmed - especially during the visually dynamic chip-assisted fight scenes - and unexpectedly hilarious, expect this to end up on "movies most deserving of sequels" lists from now until the heat death of the Universe.
