Lars Von Trier may be the most famous name to grace this list, but the Dogme 95 helmer is no stranger to controversy and despite his relative fame has been able to continue shocking audiences throughout his storied career as recently as last year’s The House That Jack Built. That’s not the flick we’re highlighting though, because as intense as the Matt Dillon starring black comedy horror is, it can’t compare to 2009’s Antichrist.

Following the deteriorating minds and bodies of a couple who have suffered a tragic loss, Antichrist takes a hammer to conventional movie romance as it depicts the pair coming undone in agonizingly slow sequences of torture. The most infamous scene sees Willem Dafoe’s protagonist have his genitals crushed before then being stimulated, leaving him ejaculating blood onscreen, but there’s a long string of smaller sickening shocks which build up to this eventual grotesque crescendo.
