15 Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Movies

Ok. Don’t throw your toys out the pram. Give it a chance. The much-derided Alien 3 has been the subject of much controversy. It pales in comparison to its universally adored predecessors. It was slammed by everyone, including its own director, who totally disowned it and still refuses to have anything to do with it. But as a part of such an iconic and ongoing franchise, it was the subject of much attention. Its creators were vocal about their dissatisfaction with it and as such it eventually got a notable re-working in the form of a new edit, officially known as the Assembly Cut. In this reconstructed version, which includes almost forty minutes of previously unused footage and an extensive re-edit of the rest, it found a begrudging audience.

In either version though there is a sense of dread clinging to the atmosphere of the film. Unfortunately, this dread doesn’t come from the titular alien but from the setting and from Ripley’s new companions. Ripley is marooned on an all-male prison planet, populated exclusively by violent offenders. Under the constant threat of rape and assault, Ripley is once again forced to track down and destroy the alien.

She is in a crucible of hatred and danger, as she is forced to team up with her would-be rapists to fight a common threat. In the end, her only way out and her only way to win and to escape is to die.

Is it good? It doesn’t have to be disturbing as fu**. And it is that.
