15 Most Groundbreaking Movies Of The Decade (So Far)

6. Mommy

What's it about? Anne Dorval stars as widow Diane Després, a mother struggling to cope with her erratic and violence-prone son Steve after he's released from a juvenile detention centre. As she tries to rebuild their lives and provide him with the opportunities needed to overcome his ADHD and fit in with other people, some much-needed assistance comes from their new neighbour Kyla (Suzanne Clément). What makes it groundbreaking? Shooting a film in different aspect ratios, while unusual, isn't completely unheard of - Wes Anderson's latest film The Grand Budapest Hotel altered the ratio according to the scene's requirement to great effect. Mommy director Xavier Dolan took things in a different direction by shooting his movie almost entirely in the unusual 1:1 aspect ratio, lending the film the appearance of Instagram. Speaking of his decision, Dolan said "it seems a more humble and private format, a little more fitting to these lives we're diving into."
