6. Changeling
What Everyone Expected: It certainly doesn't help that the title of this 2008 Clint Eastwood-directed drama bears an overwhelmingly similar moniker to the 1980 George C. Scott-starring horror flick The Changeling, but even so, on its own terms it's a title that suggests a certain supernatural element. So, Angelina Jolie's son disappears, is returned to her, but the kid is in fact an alien imposter or something, yeah? What Actually Happened: Changeling is in fact a totally grounded film about police corruption and the LAPD's efforts to pass off another child as the missing one for their own political gain. It's not a bad film by any means (if not one of Eastwood's best), though the various sinister plot synopses which came out before the movie was released certainly didn't help avoid all this confusion. What It Should Have Been Called: The Imposter, and they would've beaten the brilliant 2012 documentary to the punch by a good four years.
