What Everyone Expected: A balls-to-the-wall action movie franchise seeing the greatest action stars of all time teaming up, and of course, more than a few of them get killed off along the way. What Actually Happened: Well, the three Expendables films to date have featured some entertaining action and amusing banter, but not a single significant character on the Expendables' side has bit the bullet yet. They teased Gunner (Dolph Lundgren) getting killed off in the first movie, Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) was killed in the second movie but given his age and lack of action cred he didn't really count, and Terry Crews depressingly spent most of EX3 in a hospital bed, but survived at least. Considering these guys are deemed expendable by Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford and whoever hires them next time, it's pretty surprising that they all manage to come out of every mission unscathed, all the more so considering the brutal R-rating of the first two movies, and the hardcore tone this implies. What It Should Have Been Called: The Dependables, which of course has a built-in gag about the gang being so old they need to start wearing Depend diapers...
