Richard Kelly's 2001 cult hit Donnie Darko is one of the most beloved movies of the early 2000s, though even hardcore fans of the film might scarcely remember this 2009 sequel that was produced without Kelly's involvement.

In fact, the only returning cast member is Daveigh Chase, who played Donnie's (Jake Gyllenhaal) sister Sam in the original movie and becomes the focal character for this tepid, pretentious attempt to recapture the original's magic.

Incoherent, rife with laughable dialogue and desperately dull, the acting and cinematography are basically fine but, well, that's about it. Donnie Darko was a lightning-in-the-bottle success, and this feels like nothing more than a soulless, ersatz imitation.
